How To Prepare Your Cabinet Glass Doors And Install Your Cabinet Glass Inserts

If your wanting to add cabinet glass inserts to your cabinet doors, whether your inserts are traditional lead came stained glass, Copper foil, or stained glass overlay, but your cabinet door are solid, then you have two options to go about doing this.

The first is to hire a finish carpenter, and ask them to make cutouts for glass inserts. The second option, is the Do-It-Yourself version where you follow these guidelines and use some hand tools to prep your cabinets for your glass inserts.

TOOLS NEEDED:

  1. Ruler
  2. Pencil
  3. Drill
  4. Jigsaw /reciprocating saw /sawzall
  5. Router
  6. Glass clips or silicone

Prepare Your Cabinets For Cabinet Glass Inserts

  1. Remove your cabinet from your cabinets.
  2. Mark out a border of the back/inside of the cabinet door - this will be your cut line.
  3. Drill a hole in a corner of the INSIDE of the marked line. Make sure your hole is big enough ______continued.

  4. Use your saw to cut on the inside of your marked line.
  5. Once the center of your cabinet door is cut out, use the router to create a lip that the glass will sit on. Make sure that your making the BACK of the cabinet door larger, not the front.
  6. Measure the opening of the cabinet door, this is called your T.R.O or tight rough opening.
  7. With the measurements in hand go to Ez-Inserts.com for glass insert designs, order a design and supply the measurements
  8. Once you receive your glass inserts, place the inserts onto the lips of the cabinet doors.
  9. You can either silicone the cabinet inserts into place to stop them from rattling when you open and close the cabinet door, or you can pin them in place by installing glass clips.
  10. Attach your cabinet back onto your cabinets
  11. Step back and enjoy your new beautiful cabinet glass inserts.
